Don't start with your CV!??: Job search "know-how" tip

Most people start their job search by "jumping" on their?CVs, I'm asking you to hold on for a moment, put your CV aside and start with some research. ??

The first step is to understand the market. Different industries and markets have different common titles and requirements for roles. An example I always give is recruitment, there is a difference between an "in-house" recruiter and an agency recruiter. Searching for a "recruiter" role on Google/ job board might be confusing if you aim for only one of the above.

Another example is the title SW developer, titles like "programmer" / "SW engineer" might be more popular in different markets or industries. A simple Google search with the words JOB+ role title + domain will bring you to a list of openings. Take time to read the job description and understand the role's responsibilities and requirements.

At this point, I recommend opening an Excel and starting to document any buzzwords you come across, different courses or certifications required or the technology stack/ skills mentioned.?

You can also start taking notes regarding the "main players": who the companies are hiring for the roles you are interested in, what teams are hiring, where they publish their open positions (agencies/ job boards), and maybe even identify who are the hiring managers.

Your second step is to Google/use Chatgpt to research CV formats. Download examples for CV formats and cover letters (if applicable). You can use other tools, like Canva , that offer "ready-made" templates you can work on. Things to think about:

??1. How is the CV structured? Is there a personal summary? Where do you put your education paragraph? (first / last).

??2. How are personal details presented? What details are usually mentioned? (name, email, full address, visa status)?

??4. How long should the CV be? ( one page/ two pages? more?).

??Eventually, your research should cover the following: job titles, buzzwords and skills, technology stack, recommended CV formats, and company names. This list will help you to craft your CV and begin your job search.

A targeted approach is always best and quality over quantity - Click and apply effect doesn't work. Targeted searches comes from good research.
