Don’t Start With Goals in 2023

It’s 2023 and time to set personal and professional resolutions. Maybe we will set a goal to lose all the weight we gained over the holidays…or start going back to the gym…or how about a goal to increase our savings…or a goal to do a better job of staying in touch with loved ones…or to finish that project we started a while back…or a goal to go back to school…or a goal to…etc…,etc…, etc.

I have an idea. Before you embark on these well-intended resolutions that (according to statistics) you will keep for about 2 months, why not try something different? Instead of starting with goals, take a step back and create expectations for your life. For instance, instead of saying, “I want to lose weight” start with “Being healthy is important to me”. Set several of those kind of expectations for yourself then pick the top one or two. Once you have your top expectations defined, make a commitment that you will achieve those expectations.

Once you have set your expectations, prioritized your list and made a commitment to yourself, you are ready to set goals that will help you to meet your expectations. Be sure to include accountability metrics in your goal plan.

When we take the time to develop our expectations, priorities and commitments, we are on the way to achieving our goals and ultimately making a difference!

Happy New Year!?
