Don't be a slave to the size label

Don't be a slave to the size label

When I display my preloved clothing at pop-up events I don’t group them by size. The simple reason being that the size on a clothing label can be an arbitrary form of measurement. My concern is that people will only look at clothes labelled ‘their size’ and no further. In reality, that size 16 may fit a 12 and vice versa.

Sizes can differ enormously between brands, and what’s even more frustrating is that it?can sometimes vary with the same brand.

So true. I have sizes 8, 10, 12 and even a 14 in my wardrobe and all of S, M, L and wear them all. It is true though that a size 10 from 30 years ago won’t fit me now !

I love this, Jane Horwood! I routinely check at least 6 different sizes when shopping, because there’s no telling what might fit nicely. I’d check even more, if I had the patience to do so. ?? I’m curious how you do organize and display your clothes.

Sizing can affect wellbeing and psychology. I've mentioned body image on my LI post today and it's very discouraging and confusing to go from one shop to another and be a different size. I am an hourglass and so hard to find something that works without alterations or it's just boring stuff with stretch which is wasteful. I'm a bit better with the sewing machine now and my mum is great sewer but if only it was more universal we might buy less or buy with enjoyment.

There’s such a disparity between brands and styles! We place so much emphasis on the label rather than the fit, I knew someone who was usually a size 10 and wouldn’t buy an item because it fitted in a size 14!

I started making my own clothes years ago because I could never get things to fit the way I liked them. When I do buy things I nearly always alter them so I tend to look for colours and fabrics that I like rather than go by size. This is what makes exploring your rails so exciting Jane! Great colours, lovely fabrics and things that are individually beautiful rather than the rails of things that all look exactly the same or follow the latest cookie-cutter trend.
