Don’t Settle For Mediocrity

Don’t Settle For Mediocrity

A healthy team is critical to the success of any organisation, when you nail your company culture and have all the right people on the boat rowing in the same direction, magic happens!

For those of you who have achieved this, you know what I mean, it’s like a weight has been lifted off the organisation, simply from not having to worry about an underperforming or toxic teammate. People just get things done and it is truly magical how much a healthy, cohesive, and trusting team can achieve together.

Conversely, the impact of having the wrong person on that boat can be toxic to your business. They are often rowing in a different direction to the rest of the team, or not rowing at all or even worse, getting other team members to row in the wrong direction as well!

They generally won’t fit your culture, and most likely don't get or want the job either, and if you’ve identified that you have the wrong person in your organisation, the worst thing you can do as a leader, is to do nothing!

Allowing the person to stay, for whatever reasons you may use to justify keeping them, is hurting your business in so many ways. I’ve heard these phrases too often:

  • But they are such nice person...
  • Oh, but they are so good when they’re speaking to clients...
  • We just can't handle the volume of work we have without them...
  • We’ll give them another 3 months...
  • We've created a process around them…

To be honest, I've have uttered some of them myself and in my experience, there are several reasons why we as leaders fail to act, and by far the main reason is the lack of accountability in the organisation.

This can often come from leaders themselves not demonstrating accountability for themselves or failing to hold others accountable, and it becomes challenging to instil this value throughout the business.

Instilling Accountability in a team can be hard work but it has to be done to develop and grow your business. The good news is that there is a tried and tested method that can get you there. EOS? has several tools and discipline in its toolbox to help any leader improve accountability within their organisation.

As an EOS Implementer?, I work with organisations to clearly define their Core Values, set roles and responsibilities for their teams, introduce scorecards and metrics to further drive up the level of accountability, and this is just the start of how EOS? can bring accountability to your business, and the best part is that it starts with the Leadership Team.

So, don’t settle for mediocrity, there is hope for you as a leader and owner. All it takes is a willingness to change, a willingness to stay consistent and injecting discipline in your organisation to create that level of accountability that will allow it to grow.

If you would like to find how I can help you and your leadership team instil Accountability within your organisation, feel free to get in touch. In the meantime, I highly recommend reading Traction by Gino Wickman, this book changed my life, and is the reason I became an EOS Implementer?
