If They Don't See Me, How Can They Be?

If They Don't See Me, How Can They Be?

I can't play small! When I see me, (a younger person that looks like me), - my assignment is to make sure that I am seen. When I walk into a classroom or into a gymnasium, or into a conference, and I see young people that looks like me, I need them to know that I see them. I ALWAYS acknowledge them.

Help them believe

We often don't believe in ourselves or our dreams when we have not seen anyone that looks like us living those dreams. When people see me, and I am the guest speaker for their school assembly, or I am the basketball coach in a league that is predominately white males, or as the program manager for a program in an industry that has historically excluded them, it matters. It matters that they see me, and that they know that I see them.

The Spark of Inspiration

After serving in the Army, I went to college. There I met a man who would have a profound effect on my life, Herman. I didn't know it then, but I recognize it now. Herman was the first black man that I had met who wielded the type of influence that was undeniable and unquestionable. He was the director of the multi-million dollar student recreation center. His word was gold. Not only that, but he acknowledged me. He saw promise and value in me. His intentional interactions with me would shape my future.

Representation can be transformative

Representation is not just about seeing and being seen; it's about believing. When we see individuals who share our background achieving success, it's as if a door to our own potential swings open. Suddenly, we believe that we, too, can reach those heights. That self-belief is a powerful force, propelling us forward, unshaken by doubts.

Overcoming Stereotypes

Stereotypes are persistent, but they crumble in the face of representation. Time and again, I've witnessed individuals, including myself, defy stereotypes and shatter preconceived notions. Our accomplishments speak louder than any bias, and representation empowers us to be our authentic selves, unburdened by misconceptions.

Fostering Belonging

But it's not just about being a face in the crowd; it's about being acknowledged. When I stand before a group, whether as a speaker, coach, or program manager, I take a moment to let them know that I see them too. It's a gesture that says, "You belong here, just as I do." That sense of belonging is transformative.

Society's Evolution

Representation isn't a fleeting trend; it's the cornerstone of societal evolution. When we champion diversity and inclusion, we foster innovation, embrace fresh perspectives, and drive positive change. Our organizations and communities become vibrant tapestries of talent and experience.

Paving the Way for others

With representation comes responsibility. As a representative figure, I've taken on the role of an advocate. Advocating for greater diversity and inclusion within our workplaces, institutions, and communities. It's about opening doors for others, just as mine were opened for me.

Passing the Torch

The beauty of representation is its ripple effect. I've witnessed countless individuals who, inspired by my journey or the journeys of others, have gone on to achieve their own dreams or make a difference in their communities. It's a testament to the enduring impact of seeing me and those who look like me.

Be the Change

So, here's my challenge to you. Actively seek out and support representation in your life. Amplify the voices of those who are underrepresented, mentor the next generation, and advocate for diversity in your spheres of influence. Together, we can ensure that every room reflects the beautiful diversity of our world.

Remember these words: "

"If They Don't See me, How Can They Be?" It's a question that resonates in every corner of our lives, reminding us of the transformative power of representation.
