You don't have to be scared of the recession that's upon us. Because you can still find your next job, even if you're over 40.
There are two major ways that age 40+ candidates will find a job during the recession.
Which one are you trying?
Here are two ways job seekers over 40 will find a job during the recession:
- Job Boards And "Old School" Job Search Networking: While this is what you've been taught by outplacement, most career coaches and authors, job boards and "old school" job search networking depend on luck, random applications, and volume. "Old School" networking rarely moves much beyond your contacts and Linkedin connections. While a few candidates might get lucky and land their next job this way, for most of you this method causes you to lose interviews and offers even when you're qualified - because it conflicts with employer hiring processes.
- Networking Optimized To The Hidden Job Market: Smart age 40+ job seekers will learn how to optimize their networking to the hidden job market. The best career moves and highest paying positions are almost always filled via the hidden job market during recessions.
- Companies in all industries will have "emergency hires" when a critical position opens due to layoffs or because employees may find a new job (many work from home employees will job search). These emergency hires will often be filled immediately, before posting (even internally) through the hidden job market.
- Some companies will use the downturn to steal talent, upgrading their staffs for key positions and betting on a quick rebound. These positions will almost exclusively be filled by the hidden job market during the recession. If employers don't find the right candidates during the downturn, they may turn to outside recruiters once the economy is back to expansion mode, but that's not expected until the end of the year or later. Hidden job market networking gives you the chance at these talent building opportunities now but also a second chance - filling positions where the winning candidate just left, giving you a shot at two positions for the price of one.
- Employers, even during a downturn, will keep their recruiters busy filling a pipeline of top candidates, to be ready when ready to expand again - many economists feel the country will be back to growth by year end ... pretty quick for a recession. The job seekers who are successful in learning to work the hidden job market will be the first candidates in line when the economy rebounds. Even though you might get interviews through job boards or the way you're currently networking, the top candidates will be identified earlier through the hidden job market.
- Of course some industries will expand hiring during the coronavirus epidemic, including health care, pharma, medical equipment/supply, grocery/convenience, Amazon, supply chain, delivery, online learning, and tech companies enabling remote work. Most, but not all of these positions will be hourly, freelance, contract, temp, or entry level but will have the highest job seeker competition.
But you haven't been taught how to focus your networking on the hidden job market. In addition, the average resume that you're using (with advice from outplacement, most career coaches/authors, or that you paid to have written by a resume mill or certified professional resume writers) isn't strong enough to get employer attention when competition will be 3-5+ times higher with all the newly unemployed applying for the same jobs.
Want to learn how to change your resume and job search strategy to find a job during the recession?
This is the 3rd recession I've recruited/coached through, so I've seen first hand what resume and job search strategies succeed during recessions. I've also seen mistakes candidates make, causing their recession job searches to fail. I've been through this before and know what works and what doesn't.
As a top national recruiter who reads hundreds of resumes per day, who has helped hundreds of thousands of candidates in their job search, and seen thousands of employers' job search processes from the inside, I've got a different perspective than most career coaches.
I see that most job seekers do essentially the same things, even when they think they are job searching differently. I also see most job seekers were taught search methods that get screened out by ATSs and eliminate them from consideration, because they conflict with the employer's hiring process.
But I've been teaching job seekers to overcome ageism for 13+ years by using non-traditional resume/job search strategies that demonstrate impact rather than just being average. I'll show you how to beat ageism and find a great job during the recession by understanding employers' point of view and hiring processes ... and using this understanding to beat your competition.
(I'm not just a career coach. I've also been a top national recruiter for the last 15 years ... so you'll get advice from a different perspective - an insider's point of view.)
Let me show you what you can do now to change your job search and resume so you can find a great job during the coronavirus recession, even if you're unemployed or over 40.
