Don’t run before you can walk

Don’t run before you can walk

DevOps Advocate Jack McCurdy explains why we should focus on the fundamentals first:

There are?a huge number of capabilities and technologies?available to us as Salesforce professionals. So much so that it can be overwhelming. Where do I start? What technology and topics are important? How can I deliver the most value? How can I make sure I’m reaching the most advanced level possible? It’s important to take stock, and plan to walk before you can run.

Take DevOps, for example. When looking at DevOps for the very first time the thought process often looks something like "We need to automate everything: deployments, tests, full releases — and soon!"

It’s all too easy to get carried away. And when it comes to figuring out how to actually get the tasks done, you can?think it’s?impossible, and give?up before you start because the pinnacle of DevOps excellence seems so far away

Continuing with the DevOps example, it’s often said that version control is the most important thing for a DevOps process.?It forms the foundation of unlocking reliable automation practices, which is a great place to start your learning and implementation journey. But version control is a large topic and there will?always be plenty more to learn once you have the basics.

The lesson here is to take baby steps, and stay committed to whatever topic you’re interested in. Find a place to start and learn little and often to build your knowledge and skills over time. It won’t be long before the?highest level of trailblazing in your chosen area seems within reach. Our Version control fundamentals course is perfect for those looking to get set up with this key building block of DevOps.
