Don't replace your slow computers yet!

As a business owner you want your business and team to work as efficiently as possible. So, it is worrisome when you have a group of slow computers.

Your PC is taking more time to turn on, your programs are unresponsive, or the browser tabs are not opening quickly.

Before jumping into the expensive decision of replacing your slow PCs, let’s first explore cost-effective strategies to improve their performance on both Windows 10 and 11.

?

Restart your slow computers:

A basic restart can help “clean up” the computer. It can free up memory, complete any pending software updates, and clear background processes that can potentially overwhelm the machine.

According to BBC Science Focus, A Windows computer should be shut down, or even better, restarted, once a week or so with ‘fast startup’ turned off to ensure it properly shuts down all processes and cleans up.”

If your computer has been running for a long time, this simple shut down and restart can solve common performance issues.

Manage startup applications:

Disable unnecessary startup apps to improve the computer's startup process. You can do this by navigating to Settings. Select the Apps category. Choose the Startup page. Sort apps by their "Startup impact." Turn off unnecessary apps.

To cement this change, remember to restart your computer. (Another reason to restart! :D)

Disable restartable applications:

Turn off the feature in Windows 11 that saves and restarts some applications during a computer reboot.

This can be done by accessing Settings, clicking on Accounts, going to the Sign-in options page, and toggling off the "Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in."

Uninstall unnecessary applications:

Remove unused apps to declutter your system and improve overall performance.

Open Settings, go to the Apps category, select the Installed apps page, choose the app to uninstall, and follow the on-screen instructions.

When installing new software or applications, exercise caution. Go to your app store, read their reviews, and take note of the last time they were updated.

Taking these steps can optimize your existing Windows computers before considering costly upgrades.
