Seriously. Nothing to see here.
If you're an enquiring mind and decided to stay, let me share an experiment with you. Over the past month, I've written five article a week on LinkedIn and tried a number of things just to see how they would be received and what would happen.
It's been a fascinating exercise. I see LinkedIn at a point in its life cycle as a platform with potential. I am certainly seeing more organic reach here than any social platforms.
Aside from the spammers, there is actually a significant amount of activity and engagement, back up by stats from earlier this year.
I've only got a relatively small audience and as I have been totally disconnected from the platform, so I thought it would take some work to see any results.
I want to share with you the only piece of advice I received in that month that actually made any difference to my readership. This was from one of our team as well coincidentally.
"Write something you think people will dislike."
Why was this important?
Because we live in an echo chamber. There are thousands of Gary Vaynerchuck, Tony Robbins and Casey Neistat clones telling you to hustle, find your purpose and what's up guy's!
The metrics of LinkedIn are likes, comments and shares. By removing the fear that what you are writing is supposed to get a return, you can write whatever the fuck you want!
So I did. My article titled "My Number one Company Policy" was something that I thought was a bit rough to be publishing. Even my business partner commented in shock at that one. My frank discussion about our no fuckwit policy actually struck a nerve and had enough to cut through to actually generate interaction.
To provide some perspective, my articles were ranging from 4 views to around 40. The breakout article is at 260 views and still picking up a few. For someone that wasn't contributing a month ago, it's performing 6 times better than anything else I've written.
The other takeaway that I've had from the act of writing five articles a week is how much I enjoy writing. So I'm going to keep it up and see what happens next. Will keep you posted.
I'll keep writing things I think won't work. I even told you not to read this article... did you get this far?
