Don't put them on a pedestal

Years ago, early in my leadership journey, I received a piece of advice that has always stayed with me.? It came from someone I held in high regard—my boss’s boss. He was the epitome of success, and I had always viewed him as being on a different level, almost untouchable.
During a particularly challenging period, I confided in him, saying, “Stepping up can create a bit of anxiety, especially when you're having to deal with people who are more senior.” His response was both simple and transformative.
You are just as worthy as them.
He looked at me thoughtfully and said,
“Remember, senior people aren’t better than you. They just have different experiences. We’re all human, and we’ve all started somewhere, faced our own set of challenges, and made our own mistakes. The key is not to be intimidated by titles or positions. Focus on your self-worth and learn from everyone, regardless of their rank.”
This advice struck a chord.
It reminded me that everyone is human.? Senior stakeholders have simply accumulated more experience over time. It’s easy to forget this and allow titles to overshadow the fact that we’re all capable of growth, learning, and leadership.

Everyone is on their own journey.
I began to see senior figures in a new light—not as infallible authorities but as individuals with their own stories, struggles, and triumphs. This shift in perspective made it easier for me to engage with them, ask questions, and be myself. Moreover, it instilled in me a sense of confidence. If these leaders could navigate their way to the top despite their imperfections, so could I. This realisation was liberating and empowering.
Today, as a leadership coach, I often share this story with my clients. Many of them struggle with self-doubt and impostor syndrome, feeling that they don’t measure up to the senior people around them. But the truth is, we’re all on a journey, and no one’s path is without its bumps.
So, here’s my advice: Don’t put anyone on a pedestal.
Respect and learn from them, but remember that you have just as much potential to lead and succeed. Embrace your unique journey, and remember that every leader, no matter how senior, started right where you are. Your self-worth is your greatest asset—nurture it, believe in it, and let it guide you to success.
And the?'lead with confidence' masterclass?is a great starting point if you feel anxious around senior people. Are you coming?? It's free to attend for an hour over lunchtime on Tuesday.
