Don’t Panic: How to make your next career move meaningful

Over the course of the year, I've had numerous people in my network reach out after unexpectedly finding themselves in need of new employment. Some immediately entered panic mode, accepting roles that weren't the right fit for them. The result? They felt disengaged, unmotivated and eventually found themselves back on the job hunt.
I fully understand that individual circumstances vary, and sometimes necessity drives decision-making. However, I firmly believe that whether you're intentionally seeking a new opportunity or unexpectedly thrust into a job search, it's crucial to target something that will be fulfilling. Here are four tips I would offer to anyone looking to make a meaningful career move:
KNOW WHAT YOU LOVE.?If compliance isn't your passion and you're more energised by commercial operations and strategy, don't pursue that Financial Controller position—and vice versa. Align your career moves with what genuinely excites you. Your long-term satisfaction and success will come from doing what you love, not just what looks good on paper or solved the immediate problem of being unemployed.
?
CHALLENGE YOURSELF.?Don’t settle for roles that are a walk in the park for you.?Seek out opportunities that push you out of your comfort zone and will add arrows to your quiver. Whether it's tackling new responsibilities, exploring a different industry, or taking on a more customer-facing role, embrace the unfamiliar. Growth comes from facing new challenges, not from repeating the same experiences.

UNDERSTAND THAT CULTURE EXISTS IN POCKETS.? While it’s tempting to be drawn to a brand name, remember that the people closest to you shape your experience of a company’s culture the most.?Where possible, do your due diligence on your team, peers and especially the leadership.?Sydney’s a small world, and often great sources of input and feedback are readily available within your network when you go looking.? The reality of a company’s culture can sometimes be very different from its external perception.
BE A LITTLE TERRIFIED.?Feeling a bit of fear when starting a new role is a good sign—it means you’re pushing your boundaries. The sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering a challenging role is incredibly rewarding. Embrace that initial anxiety as a catalyst for growth and success
In the end, your career is a journey, not just a series of jobs. By staying true to what you love and challenging yourself, you’ll find not just a job but also a fulfilling career that keeps you motivated and growing.
Here's to making your next move the one that truly matters.
