The last thing I'd want to do is add to the growing fear and panic caused by COVID-19.
But it's super important to actually have the facts so you can prepare properly.
The most common theme I've been seeing across social media is, "It's like getting the flu. It's an extra 3,000+ deaths compared to the flu's death toll of 20,000+. What's the big deal? It must be a government ploy to distract us from something else..."
Let me answer that for you:
1. The deaths from the Coronavirus are only getting started. Industry leading scientists and mathematicians are expecting 40-70% infection rate across our global population. They estimate a death toll of 20 to 40 million.
2. It's not a difference of an extra 3,000+ deaths. With a very high chance of scaling to the millions, it could end up being 1,000 X more deadly than the flu.
3. Our healthcare system does not have the resources or capacity to treat the number of severe cases that will arise in the next 2 months.
4. The Coronavirus has taken the global economy into a recession which could last somewhere between 6 months to 3 years.
5. Global supply chains are being affected which is going to be extremely problematic for certain cities, and will further complicate issues.
So there you have it. Just remember that how you behave right now affects all the people around you and their loved ones too, and the rest of the world. If you don't take care for yourself, at least do it for others.
If we take precautions, our healthcare system should be able to handle this. If we don't they won't, and they'll be choosing who dies and who lives because they can't handle everyone.
Don't feed into the hysteria, but just make sure you're prepared in case there is a government-enforced quarantine.
Stock up on some food. Avoid crowded places. Self-quarantine if you can. Quarantine your sick and elderly loved ones and make sure they have everything they need. Wash your hands frequently.
