Don’t miss this exhibition: nature and man in harmony as a tonic for these times

If, like me, nostalgia, the memory of place and the beauty of nature run strong in your veins, then whether you visit it online or in person, do not miss Landscape and Memories, the new exhibition by Nicholas Hely Hutchinson.

On show at the Jerram Gallery in Sherborne, Dorset from November 6 to 21, the exhibition of 35 pictures is a feast for the senses with its whimsical, often dream-like views of some of the most magical landscapes in the South West, from the Isle of Purbeck’s Jurassic coastline to the Vale of Rushmore in Wiltshire. Other stunning and special places feature too.

Ever fancied standing thigh deep in the River Spey fishing for salmon? Hely Hutchinson captures not just the moment, but that overwhelming sense of man and nature as one in this scene. The same can be said of After the Long Hot Summer, a view of a wheatfield at the end of the day, birds swirling above and a crescent moon breaking through the dying light onto the cool shadows of the country lane. It’s a moment of magic, mystery, perfect balance and yet… it is also the moment when one senses that ache for something familiar but just out of reach.

In fact, whether watching deer running through Spring woods or drinking in the majesty of Heaven’s Gate, Looking over Kimmeridge, the spiritual essence of this artist’s work can best be summed up as the visual equivalence of Kenneth Grahame’s The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, that visionary encounter with the great god of nature, Pan, in the Wind in the Willows. All it needs is Van Morrison’s ethereal anthem Into the Mystic to accompany this enchanting display.

If all this is not a tonic for these times, I don’t know what is.

Prices for the oils on canvas range from £1,900 to £12,000.

The artist will be at the gallery on November 6 and 7.
