Don't Mismatch Personal with Business
Is Social Media meant for you?
For many years I’ve worked as a Recruiter in our local community, matching employers with employees and vice versa. Many methods for business growth and marketing have come and gone over the years, but social media is by far the strongest and it is here to stay.
My goal today is to spread awareness of the dangers of social media to business professionals who are new to the game. I’ve seen many business reputations and opportunities lost by irresponsible use of social media. If you’ve only used social media socially, or if you’re new to social media as a whole, then this is for you. Here are some basic pointers to lead the way.
First, know your platforms. Social media is vast and varied, and not all platforms were created equal. Some are geared for business while others are meant for personal use. It’s important to know difference and post in the appropriate places. So, stop using LinkedIn as your personal Facebook.
Second, know your audience. So-called “Marketing Pros” are born every day, posting the most shocking and outrageous content in order to gain attention and followers. Don’t fall into the trap! Posting unprofessional content might gain followers but will definitely not gain business. Those who find your antics amusing are after a good laugh, not your business. Serious clients expect to deal with a serious company. Your business integrity is key- don’t squander it for cheap views or momentary attention. I’ve seen way too many businesses go down for this reason. Who wants to do business with a comedian?
Third, know your crowd. You might think that personal and professional are forever separate. But, it’s a very thin line. Being a clown amongst your friends and posting nonsense on your personal social media might seem fine to you in theory. But in practice it will always circle back to your professional contacts. The world is a small place. People talk. Your friends will undoubtedly be your business references too. Or, what if a potential client or a hiring manager does a quick online search? You only get one chance at a first impression so make it a good one. Always post responsibly, always stay above approach.
In closing- just be prudent. It’s not rocket science; be responsible and professional. Social media is an invaluable business tool if used wisely. And a wise man will always anticipate the future and act accordingly. So go forth and conquer the business world - one professional post at a time.
