Being a manager can offer a lot of perks. We all know that. One of the worst things about being a manager is having to terminate / layoff employees. I am not going to waste valuable space painting a picture of all the reasons terminating employees is hard, awkward and often times emotionally taxing for everyone involved. Lets cut to the chase and go over the 5 things you should never ever do when letting someone go. Don’t make these rookie mistakes.
- Don’t drag it out. Cut to the chase and be direct. Dragging out why you are sitting with them and what is happening is unprofessional and cruel. You are a manager, managers communicate clearly, pull that band aid off within 2 minutes of sitting down. If you can’t do this, you are not ready ready to lead people.
- Don’t make them feel like a criminal. If you are letting someone go due to financial or economic circumstances outside their control there is no need to have security hover all over them. If you work at CIA this might be an exception, but if you work at most run of the mill businesses dial down the drama if possible.
- When terminating someone there is no reason to tell them how and why they failed at their job. It does not matter at this point. The relationship is over. There is no reason to pig pile on the situation. The past is the past.
- Be clear about things they can be hopeful for. If there are programs or companies that might be able to use someone like them, tell them. If people are informed on whats available to them it provides tremendous peace of mind.. They are scared and likely embarrassed. Be very clear and try to communicate what they can do start on an upward trajectory again. Everyone deserves hope.
- I failed at this next one more times than I am proud of and regret it. Do it in a private setting. This should be obvious but sometimes our emotions can get the best of us and we act out of haste. Especially when someone was unprofessional or unethical. Regardless, as a manager maintain professionalism and handle terminations in a private setting.
I hope you do not need to use this list anytime soon. However, if you do please remember the items mentioned on this last.
