Don't Make These 3 Mistakes When Prospecting For Clients On LinkedIn

LinkedIn has become a powerhouse for professionals seeking to expand their networks, grow their businesses, and secure new clients.

However, like any platform, it's easy to make mistakes that can hinder your efforts.

So let's explore the top three mistakes people often make when trying to acquire clients on LinkedIn and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Neglecting Profile Optimisation

Your LinkedIn profile is your digital business card and often the first impression you make on potential clients. Neglecting to optimise your profile is a big mistake.

The general rules are to fully complete your profile and to make it client focused i.e. more about your prospects and how you can help them and less about you!

Here's a quick (but not exhaustive) checklist:

  • Good photo
  • Compelling headline
  • Well crafted About section
  • Recommendations from clients and colleagues
  • Add the Featured section so that you can display relevant content on your profile.
  • Achievements, skills, endorsements, etc.

Mistake 2: Spamming or Overly Aggressive Messaging

Things to consider when messaging:

  • Make sure you add value with your message.
  • Don't immediately follow up when somebody accepts your invitation to connect. Give it at least a few hours or days to make it look more human!
  • The number of messages depends on the prospect - if it's obvious how you can help them, you won't need many messages. If you need to educate them on how you can help them, you might need more messages over a longer period of time.
  • The content of messages depends on the prospect - as per above.
  • Send a personalised invitation to explain why you want to connect.
  • Try to build a relationship with each prospect by looking for common areas of interest.

Mistake 3: Lack of Targeted Outreach

There really is no excuse for this! Sales Navigator provides detailed search filters so it shouldn't be difficult to find the right people to connect with.

Consider the following to start with;

  • Job titles
  • Company size/employee count
  • Geography - focus on your local area first!
  • Industry.

If you have the free version of LinkedIn, you can use Boolean searches to find the right people. Just Google "Boolean searches" and you will see how much more targeted your searches will be!
