Merry Christmas and happy new year!?????
Before getting into the 3 common mistakes, I will start with the?story of Brad, who changed his life forever due to a successful new year’s resolution.?
Brad applied to become our client at the end of the last December. Brad is a senior account executive, one of the?most successful tech sales-person in the history of Microsoft?and recently he even got promoted to become a regional sales manager in a medium-sized tech company in Sidney, Australia. Brad had it all sorted out when it came to his career.?
However, he told me something was still missing for him to become satisfied with his life. All of those years, of working hard, and building his career made him neglect his body and shape, and as a result, he had around 10 excess kilos he wanted to lose. He felt that becoming healthier and losing some weight, can really improve his life in all aspects- having more confidence, better self-esteem, higher energy levels and most importantly, enjoying life more.?
For Brad, setting this as his new year’s resolution for 2022 was a?brilliant move.
He seriously committed to transforming his body and health in 2022, and eventually, it was a huge success. He lost that excess 10 kg, became confident and it also helped him get promoted. His transformation was so outstanding that now his colleagues call him “Hercules” and they want him to train them!?
Brad’s story is an excellent example of how committing to a new years resolution can change someone’s life.?
However, I’ve seen hundreds of people who failed to keep up with their health and weight loss new year’s resolutions.?
You know, in January everything seems promising- you decide to eat healthier, cut the alcohol, sign up to the gym- but a couple of months down the line, when life happens, and you’re busy at work, that’s where the real challenge begins, and unfortunately, where most people fail and quit.?
So here are?3 common mistakes?people make with their new year’s resolutions:?
? Mistake?#1: Going for a sprint, right at the beginning.?
If you’re running a marathon, 42.195 km, you know that running the first 5 km at your highest pace is foolish, and if you’ll do so you’ll probably quit before running half of the race.?
It’s exactly the same with your weight loss and health journey. Many people are very motivated to lose a lot of weight fast when they start, but going too intense and changing your entire lifestyle in 1 week is doomed to fail!?
Instead of going too intense and burnout, try this?Kai-zen approach-
Every week,?add a small habit?to your routine. For example, drink more water in the 1st week, add some fruits in the 2nd week, have a healthy breakfast in the 3rd, walk 6k+ steps in the 4th and so on... Especially if you’re a busy professional or business owner, who has many other priorities besides health and weight loss, it’s a very intelligent strategy.?
To share a secret with you, this continuous improvement approach is exactly what we do with our clients. They always tell me that they don’t feel on a diet, but they still lose a lot of weight and make progress.?
?Mistake #2: Focusing solely on exercise.?
Exercise is literally amazing. I would never claim that it’s not a good thing for health and well-being. However, it has 2 main flaws:?

Most people?focus predominantly on fitness and exercise?when thinking about their new year’s resolution, so they sign up for the gym. The most famous quote among fitness trainers is “the gym is full in January, but empty in February”.?
If you’re a busy person, going to the gym and exercising every day?isn’t realistic. It’s not that you’re lazy- you’re just investing so much time and effort at your work, and hustling in the gym for hours will be very difficult when things get busy.?
?A?smarter strategy?here is focusing on nutrition and eating habits because it doesn’t take extra time from you- you already eat and cook sometimes, you just need to improve this process. And secondly, when it comes to exercise, focus on simple and light activities at the beginning- walking, jogging and similar activities. Much more realistic, much more efficient.??
?Mistake #3: Not taking your professional life into consideration
Let’s face it. If you’re reading this article on LinkedIn, you probably have a very demanding and dynamic schedule, which is very different from other people. For professionals, executives, or entrepreneurs, the traditional methods for weight loss and the “one solution fits all” programs are very difficult to follow and they will not last in the long term.??
When choosing your health strategy for 2023, you must take your busy lifestyle into consideration. Think about those 4 elements:
If you have this kind of lifestyle, going to a PT or to a classic nutritionist will not work for you.?
Instead, you need a method that will be suitable for your needs:
I hope you’ll find those tips helpful, and you’ll avoid those 3 common mistakes. I wish you a fruitful, happy and healthy 2023!?
