Don't be like a deer on the freeway

I love a good quote and I am pretty sure I'm not the only one...
The favourite quote of the team here at Ruler Analytics is:
"In God we trust. All others must bring data" by W. Edwards Deming, the statistician, professor & author. So much so, we even put it on our t-shirts!
Obviously with data and analytics being the heart and soul of the business, the quote had to be directly related. But data has gone beyond the statisticians, with 'big data' driving decisions worldwide; it has never been more imperative to understand your customer.
This understanding can, for some businesses, come from close relationships which are built up over time. But not all model's fit this mold, and diving into the world of analytics may provide the insight required to make effective calls on the future position of a business.
Carly Fiorina, former president of Hewlett-Packard said "The goal is to turn data into information, and information into insight".
Another favourite has to be Geoffrey Moore, the author and consultant. For someone preaching the virtues of understanding analytics, quotes don't get much better: "Without big data analytics, companies are blind and deaf, wandering out into the web like deer on a freeway".
Finally, and from more of a fictional source, the famous Sherlock Holmes (well, Arthur Conan Doyle) said "It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data".
I urge you to look at the data you have and make the most of it, the more you have the better!
Don't be the proverbial deer on a freeway, open your eyes and ears and start to use the insight you gain to plan your next move.
