Holiday revelry is great for the hospitality industry. Combined with our high tourism season, the last quarter of the year and the beginning of the new year can be a very busy time for bars and restaurants around the state. But the holidays can also bring some added dangers such as overconsumption, underage drinkers and those making poor decisions — like getting behind the wheel after a holiday gathering.
?
It's important that even during the busiest of times, bar and restaurant owners (and their staff), stay vigilant. Here are a few tips to help you keep your staff, your customers and your business safe and sound all season long:
?
Maintain continual training and protocols — The holidays may bring extra guests to your business and your staff may be hustling and bustling more than ever. However, that is no excuse for skipping proper protocols such as ID’ing customers or keeping a watchful eye for those that may be on their way to overconsumption.
?
Your staff is a crucial part of your business’s success. With proper training, they can ensure their own safety as well as the safety of your business. Maintain ongoing education for staff members on what to look for when serving alcohol to customers, as well as the safety procedures in all areas of your restaurant. This is a minor extra step, but it can save you some major hassle down the line.
?
Hang onto camera footage — Timestamped video footage can be a crucial piece of evidence in a lawsuit if an incident happens in or around your establishment. Video surveillance is a safety net that you won’t regret having. I always recommend holding onto camera footage for at least 30 days or even longer, even if you don’t think there was an incident recorded.
?
Increase seasonal security — You’re not a scrooge if you have security, you’re smart. Beefing up your security during holiday and high season is yet another measure that can keep your customers, your staff and your business safe. Security at the door is your first line of defense against those with fake IDs or who have already been indulging in a little too much holiday cheer. Stop them in their tracks with highly trained security personnel.?

Happy Hospitality in 2025
The end of the year is a great time to take stock of your life and your business to see how and what you want to improve upon in the new year. When doing so in relation to your business, take some time to review your current insurance policy with your trusted broker. Remember, we want to be your partner in your success. And an experienced, knowledgeable broker, especially one, like me, that knows the ins and outs of the bar and restaurant business, can be your secret weapon to prosperity in the new year.
?
A few tips as you review your policy:
????????????? -Stay current on premiums payments so you don’t experience any gaps in coverage.
-Keep your documentation and certifications in an easily accessible place (hey, there’s an app for that!).
-Let your broker review your policy and make sure you let them know about any major changes in your business that could impact your coverage.
-Keep in mind, the rates are the rates. However, you can avoid increasing your rate, or even paying double, by taking precautions for your business so you can prevent a claim. Even just one claim can raise your rate by 50 to 100%!
