Don't Let Stress Rule You!

Don't Let Stress Rule You!

Do you ever feel like stress is your unwelcome BFF? Sadly, you're not alone. In today's crazy world, stress seems to lurk around every corner, thanks to those sneaky troublemakers called stressors. Let's take an educated look into what these stressors are all about – the stuff that triggers our stress and messes with our mental and physical selves.

What's the Deal with Stressors?

So, what's a stressor?

It's basically anything that shows up in your life and messes with your inner calm. Picture this: deadlines that seem to be on steroids, money troubles that won't quit, or just the general chaos of your daily grind. These are the guys that press your stress buttons and kickstart all those crazy feelings inside you.

Types of Stressors

Stressors can come from anywhere, however, they can be categorised into three unique ways:

  1. The World's Got Issues Stressors: These are the world's way of "messing with you" – noisy neighbors, pollution, weather, or those taxi strikes (if you live in Cape Town the day I write this). They get your heart racing and make you ready to fight or flee.
  2. People Can Be Stressors Too: Sadly, sometimes it's your fellow humans causing the ruckus – drama with your family or friends, job stress, or feeling like the world is out to get you. These ones might have a major impact on your emotions.
  3. Body Blow Stressors: Your own body can throw curveballs, too. Think sickness, injuries, or just pushing yourself too hard physically.

Stressor Effects

These stressors are like the puppeteers, pulling your strings and messing with your life in all sorts of ways. When they first pop up, your body's like, "Game on!" – pumping out hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. But here's the twist: too much of this action isn't good. It can mess with your mind, lead to anxiety, depression, have a negative impact on your heart, make your immune system weak, and even mess with your brainpower, creating a vicious thought cycle running a loop between your conscious and subconscious minds.

Tackling Those Stressors

Feeling like stressors are raining down on you? Don't worry, there's an umbrella for that. In my book, From Stress to Success, I look at many aspects of helping you take back control. Techniques such as meditation, exercise, talking about it, or even seeking help from professionals.

Figuring out what's causing your stress and dealing with it head-on can make a world of difference.

Stressors might be the villains in your life story, but you've got the power to give them a run for their money. By understanding what's stressing you out, you can learn to take back control, show them who's boss and regain that inner peace.

I think your comment "take back control" is key, Jason. Stress can make us feel like victims. However, gaining the skills to deal with stress ultimately makes us healthier happier humans.
