Don't let Others Define Your TEFL journey... Explore 6 bold ways to chart your own course to success!

'Forget the conventional box that everyone wants to put you in!

Your definition of success should be personal!'

The early morning sun was just peeking over the horizon as I stood at the arrivals gate of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport.

My TEFL certificate, still crisp in its envelope, felt like a talisman in my trembling hands.

At 53, with the ghosts of a corporate career still lingering, I was about to embark on what I thought would be a year-long teaching adventure in Thailand.

Little did I know, that moment would be the first step on a journey that would completely redefine my understanding of success, purpose, and the boundless possibilities of a TEFL degree.

Fast forward more than a decade, and I'm writing this from a bustling café in Beijing, having just wrapped up a board meeting for Grace Hardison TEFL University, where I now serve as Chairman and Principal.

The path from that nervous newcomer to where I am now has been anything but straight. It's been a winding road of challenges, triumphs, and unexpected detours that have led me to a life more fulfilling than I ever imagined.

So, fellow TEFL adventurers – whether you're just starting out or looking to shake things up – are you ready to break free from the conventional career path and explore the endless possibilities your TEFL degree offers?

Buckle up, because we're about to dive into six bold ways to make your TEFL journey uniquely yours.

1. Embrace the "Slash Career"

Who says you have to choose just one path? In today's interconnected world, the "slash career" is becoming increasingly common and celebrated.

Think Teacher/Blogger/Online Tutor or Curriculum Developer/YouTuber/Freelance Writer.

When I first arrived in Chiang Mai, I was laser-focused on being the best volunteer teacher I could be.

But as I settled into my new life, I realized I had so much more to offer – and so much more I wanted to explore.

This multifaceted approach not only diversified my income but also kept me creatively stimulated and continually learning.

It allowed me to weather the storm when traditional teaching jobs became scarce and opened doors I never knew existed.

Action step:

List your passions and skills beyond teaching.

How can you integrate these into your TEFL career?

Start small – perhaps a YouTube channel sharing language learning tips or a podcast about expat life.

Remember, every expert started as a beginner.

2. Go Digital (But Keep It Personal)

The online education boom is here to stay, but that doesn't mean you have to become a faceless entity in a sea of virtual tutors.

Use technology to amplify your unique teaching style and connect with students globally.

I'll never forget my first online class – a comedy of errors with frozen screens, echoing audio, and a very patient student trying not to laugh at my fumbling.

But I persevered, driven by the spark of excitement I felt connecting with learners across borders.

Today, with over 7,000 hours of online teaching under my belt, I can confidently say that the digital classroom can be just as rewarding as a physical one.

The key?

Infusing your digital classes with the same energy and personalization you'd bring to a physical classroom.

Create custom lesson plans based on your students' interests, use props and virtual backgrounds to make grammar lessons more engaging, and never underestimate the power of a genuine smile – even through a webcam.

Action step:

Explore platforms beyond the usual suspects.

Could you create a course on Skillshare?

Host a language-learning challenge on Instagram?

The digital world is your oyster – get creative!

3. Turn Your Classroom into a Launchpad

Your TEFL experience is more than just a line on your resume – it's a goldmine of transferable skills and unique perspectives.

Use your time in the classroom (physical or virtual) to lay the groundwork for your next big move.

During my early days in Chiang Mai, I noticed a gap in culturally sensitive, engaging English materials for Thai students.

What started as creating supplementary worksheets for my classes evolved into collaborations with local educators and eventually contributed to my role in shaping curriculum at a university level.

Action step:

Pay attention to the challenges and opportunities you encounter in your teaching.

Could you develop a solution?

Whether it's an app, a textbook, or a new teaching methodology, your on-the-ground experience is invaluable.

4. Combine TEFL with a Cause You Care About

Teaching English is powerful, but combining it with social impact?

That's a game-changer.

Find a cause you're passionate about and explore how your TEFL skills can make a difference.

For me, it was about bridging cultural divides.

What started as simple language lessons has blossomed into friendships that span thousands of miles across Asia.

These long-standing connections have enriched my life immeasurably, proving that education can truly bridge cultural divides.

Action step:

Research organizations in your area (or online) that align with your values.

Reach out and propose a collaboration that leverages your TEFL skills.

Remember, you're offering a valuable service – approach these partnerships with confidence.

5. Become a Niche Expert

In a sea of general English teachers, specialization can set you apart. Find your niche and own it.

My journey led me to specialize in online education and teacher training. I immersed myself in the sector, constantly updating my skills and adapting to new technologies.

This expertise not only led to better-paying opportunities but also positioned me to take on leadership roles in TEFL education.

Action step:

Reflect on your interests, background, or the industries prevalent in your area.

How can you tailor your TEFL skills to serve a specific market?

Whether it's English for medical professionals, exam preparation, or even teaching English through cooking, carve out your unique space.

6. Create Your Own TEFL-Inspired Business

Who says your TEFL degree can only lead to teaching?

Use your experiences and insights to create a business that serves the TEFL community or leverages your cross-cultural communication skills.

My own journey has led me from volunteer teacher to Board Chairman and Principal of a TEFL University.

It's a far cry from where I started, but it draws on every ounce of experience I've gained along the way.

Now, I have the opportunity to shape the future of TEFL education and inspire a new generation of teachers.

Action step:

Brainstorm problems you've encountered in your TEFL journey.

Could you create a solution?

Whether it's a placement agency for TEFL teachers, a cultural adaptation app for expats, or a line of classroom materials, there's no limit to where your entrepreneurial spirit can take you.

The World Is Your Classroom

As I reflect on this transformative decade-plus journey, I'm filled with gratitude for the unconventional path my TEFL degree has led me down.

It hasn't always been easy – there have been moments of doubt, financial uncertainty, and cultural faux pas that still make me cringe.

But each challenge has been a lesson, each setback a setup for a comeback.

Your TEFL journey is yours to define.

Don't let anyone else's definition of success constrain you.

Whether you dream of rising through the ranks in a prestigious international school, building a location-independent online teaching empire, or using your TEFL skills as a launchpad into an entirely different sector, remember this: Your unique combination of skills, experiences, and passion is your superpower.

So, TEFL adventurers, I challenge you: Take that first bold step off the beaten path. Embrace the uncertainty, lean into the discomfort of trying something new, and watch as your world expands in ways you never imagined.

After all, isn't that why we got into this in the first place?

To explore, to connect, to grow?

Your journey awaits.

Where will your TEFL degree take you?
