Don't let this one thing get in the way of your promotion

Have you ever felt uncomfortable when discussing your achievements? I know I have.

I remember the first time I realized I wasn’t moving up in my career because I wasn’t making my work known. I knew it was a critical skill to learn if I wanted to advance, so I worked at it (I would literally have my managers review emails I wanted to send out).

It's important to remember that leaders want to know how the work you’re doing is impacting the company's bottom line. After all, your victories are their victories, too.

It’s all in the framing. My favorite ways are to present information as either a way to:

• Share learnings/wins that others can learn from.
• Present learnings grounded in data and facts that align with the company’s bottom line.

Here’s an example taken from my team’s weekly newsletter. Notice that this blurb highlights the topics that resonate with our audience and shows how we’re going to use them to drive more impact.
