Don't Let That Go to Waste
“Don’t Let That Go to Waste” was a phrase often used by mothers of people of a certain age. It was not so much that they were awesome “recyclers”. However, on the other hand, maybe those mothers were the originators of today’s recycling movement. Their mothers had lived through the Great Depression when food and money was scarce. Everything was valued and nothing wasted.
In my case, “Don’t let that go to waste” was often followed by “Or I’ll throw to the pigs”. The meaning was that as active children, we were always hungry and if we did not finish our meal we could not come back later to snack on it – Mom was going to throw it to feed the pigs.
I did not really understand this statement as a kid as we did not have pigs in our very-in-the-city Seattle backyard. This statement from my Minnesota farm-girl mother was baffling to me and my snicker was not the response she wanted to hear.
However, the phrase “Don’t let it go to waste” has always stuck with me. On the down-side of this phrase, I used to have too much stuff I knew I could put to good use later. That changed with our last move and several garage clean-outs. On the up-side, ensuring that time, talents, relationships, and opportunities don’t go to waste has helped me enjoy more of my life.
It is sad to see education, experience or opportunities not being fully utilized and experienced. At times we all feel something has gone to waste in our lives. I think this becomes more of a reality for the over 50 crowd who, like me, may have been raised by “Don’t let it go to waste” mothers.
You want security, confidence, direction, and pathway as you move forward in your life. Yo do not want it to go to waste. You want to be comfortable in yourself, and your direction, and that your pursuit is worthy of your energy.
