Don't be a leader, be a legend.

Don't be a leader, be a legend.

Stevie Nicks is quoted as saying, "Don't be a lady, be a legend." A maxim to be yourself and not necessarily live to an expectation. Brilliant.

So what about leadership? There are thousands of books and posts (including this one) written on the topic of leadership. What it takes, the difference between leadership and other (often downplayed) roles such as manager or subject matter expert. Leadership when you're in the corner office, church, school, pitch or playground.

Maybe, just maybe you can aim higher.

To be a leader it's commonly accepted that you need to inspire action in others, so what does it take to be a legend?

You need to be remembered beyond your remit. Think of those examples that come to mind when 'legendary leaders' are mentioned. They moved thousands, if not millions of people - far far beyond what could be considered as their 'original' remit.

How do you become a legend?

  • You need followers - relationships matter, give at every opportunity
  • You need a purpose - something worth striving for
  • You need recall - something worth remembering
  • You should always be teaching - be kind
  • You need to build a track record - get results
  • You need to be yourself.

I like Jennifer Bridges’ article here on Linked in also.

It is not out of your reach to achieve legend status, to be

"someone who leaves behind an unforgettable impression on others."

As you look ahead, don't (just) be a leader, be a legend.

I would add to the discussion - Don't be a leader; be a champion. Don't focus on yourself; focus on helping your team improve by making your teammates feel safe and supported :) Understand your position as someone whose role is to make things happen, but you won't win without building a strong and diverse team.

Very cool post Paul and often forgotten leadership traits while leaders are striving to ‘hit the numbers’.

Hard to believe, but I like Stevie Nicks probably even more than I like you, Paul :) So I did the legend test and perhaps failed. Big check: be myself, get results, be kind, purpose. Small check: recall. No check: Followers ... I'm leaning towards Brian (from the Life of Brian) who said "Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't need to follow me, You don't need to follow anybody! You've got to think for your selves! You're ALL individuals! " Legendary movie, by the way
