Hi! My name is Parissa. This is "Modern Badass: A Field Guide", where Modern Badasses can feel seen, understood and valued. One of the biggest frustrations that my Badass clients experience is feeling misunderstood. It's beyond frustrating for them. It's hurtful. The frustration and hurt are understandable because, for the most part, they are misunderstood by others.
I'll let you all in on a little secret about Badasses: they don't wake up in the morning desiring to cause discord or harm. They also don't say, "Gosh, it would be wonderful to upset someone today." Badasses aren't malignant actors. They do not operate with ill intent.
Do the work.
I empathize with Badasses when they express their frustration over being misunderstood. I've been there and have been that frustrated (or worse) person.
Badasses are often in a conundrum of their own making, though. How can they be better understood if they don't:
?? express vulnerability or allow themselves to be known?
?? express curiosity about others?
It is the height of laziness to believe that by virtue of talent, vision, desire to work hard, past results, etc., you are owed understanding or a free pass.
No one owes you understanding. No one owes you a free pass. If you want to be better understood, you have to do the work to be better understood. It's not immediately granted to you upon reaching a certain age or graduating from high school, college, etc.
You have to try. You have to open the door to understanding.
Yes, trying something new feels awkward.
Anytime a person tries something new looks and feels awkward. It's not an excuse to not try.
You don't need to be confident to express vulnerability. You need just enough courage to take that first step.

In my book, there is an entire chapter on vulnerability. Spending time pretending to be invulnerable is like wearing an oversized figleaf. No one believes that you're that invulnerable so why bother trying?
The concern that Badasses share with me is that somehow they will lose face. The quicker you express vulnerability and show that you're human, the quicker everyone on the team can express their own vulnerability. That creates and strengthens alignment around a goal and strategy
Don't believe me? That's fine, let's look to Patrick Lencioni when he wrote,
When CEOs build real, deep, vulnerability-based trust with team members and understand the different contexts of conversations they are having, they can get the support they need while maintaining the authority their role requires.
