Don’t Just Tell -> Say Why

Don’t Just Tell -> Say Why

Have you ever had a boss tell you to do something with no explanation?? Or maybe they made a decision and you were never told the back story or the why.

I’ve been making it more of a practice in my leadership role to take a step back and ask myself, “Am I communicating enough to give a clearer picture of why I made that decision?” As well as making it a point to tell my employees the reason behind the request or change I am making.??

In the fast-paced world of business, it’s easy for leaders to focus on directives and deadlines, often overlooking a crucial element: the why. Communicating the reasons behind tasks and goals to your employees is not just a nicety; it’s a necessity.

First and foremost, understanding the why fosters a sense of purpose. When employees know the rationale behind their assignments, they can see how their work fits into the bigger picture. This connection boosts motivation and engagement, turning mundane tasks into meaningful contributions.

Moreover, clarity on the why enhances trust and transparency. Employees feel respected and valued when leaders take the time to explain decisions and strategies. This open communication builds stronger, more cohesive teams where members are more likely to collaborate effectively and innovate.

Additionally, providing context helps in better decision-making and problem-solving. When employees understand the underlying goals, they can make informed choices and adapt their approaches to meet organizational objectives more efficiently.

Lastly, explaining the why cultivates a culture of learning and development. It encourages employees to ask questions, seek understanding, and continuously improve, driving both personal and organizational growth.

In essence, sharing the why is a simple yet powerful strategy that transforms the workplace, empowering employees to be more engaged, trusted, and effective in their roles!

I’d love for you all to share in the comments below how you implement this in your business and leadership role. Or if you have any questions, pose it in the comment section and let’s help each other out.

Reminds me of my parents. They never explained why. It would have learned so much if they did. That style of “because I said so - I’m in charge” just doesn’t work. Often creates mistrust, frustration and animosity.

Very well said! It's frustrating to be on the receiving end — and reminds me to be sure I communicate as thoroughly as I can with the people who I work with every day.

Sharing why gives your team members context. Helps them understand your thought process and goals. It also gives them an opportunity to let you know if they think you're missing a key step.
