Don’t Just Build a BUSINESS—Build a Perspective: The Layer Cake of Storytelling

Most people think building a great business is about hard work, clever strategy, good execution.
And sure—it is. Up to a point.
But the ones who really win? The ones who shape culture, change markets, build something people want to tattoo on their ribs?
They don’t just build businesses. They build perspectives.
Let me explain.
Welcome to the Cake
There’s a line in Layer Cake—the film—not about frosting or sponge, but about the world of crime and climbing the invisible ladders of power. One character turns to the protagonist and says:
“You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. Climb a little higher, take less shit. Till one day you’re up in the rarefied atmosphere… and you’ve forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the Layer Cake, son.”
That quote always stuck with me. Because once you’ve built something—a business, a brand, a team—you start to notice: you’re inside the cake.
All you see are the layers. Operations. Margins. Funnels. Teams. Pressure. Feedback. Algorithms. Panic.
But if you want to build something lasting, something magnetic—you can’t stay trapped in those layers.
You need to find a way to step outside the cake.
And more importantly—you need to get everyone else to see it from your point of view.
That’s what storytelling is for.
Not Just a Message. A Lens.
People think storytelling is about messages. About branding. Tone of voice. Headlines. Copy.
No. It’s much bigger than that.
Storytelling is a lens.
It’s how you help others see the world the way you do—and believe it’s the better way to see it.
When a founder says, “We believe creativity belongs in the boardroom,” that’s not a tagline—it’s a challenge to the status quo.
When a brand refuses to discount because “what we make is built to last,” that’s not stubbornness—it’s a worldview.

These aren’t stories as decoration. These are stories as structure. As strategy. As the thing that makes customers, teams, investors, and audiences line up behind you and say:
Yes. That’s the future I want to be part of.
The Real Game Isn’t the Product. It’s the Perspective.
There are plenty of great products out there—beautifully engineered, meticulously crafted, brilliantly distributed—that still fail. Why?
Because they’re just another layer in the cake. They never pulled anyone up to see the whole.
But the brands that do?
They don’t just sell the thing. They sell the way to see the thing.
Think about it. A skincare brand that turns minimalism into a quiet rebellion. A cooler company that sells toughness and outdoor grit. A tech company that makes you feel like buying a laptop makes you part of a creative elite.
These aren’t just businesses.
They’re belief systems.
And that’s the difference. You can’t build a movement from layers. You build it from a point of view.
So, What’s the Perspective You’re Asking Us to Share?
Because if all you’re doing is stacking features, benefits, campaigns, and updates—you’re inside the cake.
But if you want to lead? You’ve got to help the world step back, see it from your angle, and want to be part of it.
That’s what storytelling is for. Not just to communicate, but to convert perception.
So don’t just build a business. Build a perspective.
And then tell the story that makes the rest of us believe it too.
