Don’t Just Apply—Step Up Your Applications!

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by rejection or ghosted applications? It’s not you, it’s how you applied.
Applying for a job,? scholarship or other opportunities isn’t just about sending your documents; it’s about putting your best foot forward. This edition of Next Steps With Asenath is for you so you never hit "submit" on an application and wonder, "Did I do everything right?"
Let’s start with “Why”
When I was still “exploring” web development, I applied for anything and everything in sheer desperation (and alter confusion) from boot camps to jobs, it was just everything at the same time(so chaotic). However,? my transition to project management was a more thoughtful process. I got a scholarship for my project management course and before I applied for the scholarship I carefully thought about why I wanted to transition to project management. This helped me ascertain that the scholarship was what I needed and helped me focus my energy and create an outstanding application that earned me the scholarship.
It’s easy to get caught up in applying for any and every opportunity, but not every opportunity is right for you. I’m a big fan of intentionality and channeling energy. So, before you start that application, ask yourself why you are applying for that opportunity. Reflect on what excites you about the role or opportunity. Is it the chance to grow your skills? The mission of the organization? The potential for impact? Or even money? If the answer feels unclear, it’s okay to move on. Knowing your "why" can help you focus your energy and create outstanding applications.
Sometimes saying "no" to the wrong opportunity opens the door to the right one.
Moving Forward With Your Application
Countless times, recruiters ghosted me. Other times, I received rejection emails (maybe they should have just ghosted me, too). But as painful as these experiences were, I later discovered that the problem might not necessarily have been that I wasn’t qualified. Maybe my application didn’t get past the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) (a.k.a. the robot recruiter).
Learning this was a total game-changer. I reworked my application approach, making sure my applications didn’t fall into the digital void ever again. So, here’s my approach to any type of application and extra measures you should take to make sure your application stands out.
Step 1: Understand the Job Like You’re the Hiring Manager
During my initial job search period, I used just one well-crafted CV for every application (rookie mistake). Avoid this one-size-fits-all approach. The truth is if your CV doesn’t mirror the job description, you’ll look irrelevant.?
Think of your CV as a map, if it’s cluttered or missing landmarks (keywords from the application or job description), the robot recruiter (ATS) wouldn't know where to take it.?
Study the description (little secret: it’s a cheat sheet). Pay attention to keywords, responsibilities, and requirements. If the description says “data analysis,” don’t write “data evaluation.” Match the wording. Include key skills, software, and certifications mentioned.
Quantify your achievements. Numbers speak louder than words. Instead of saying, "I improved processes," say, "I increased process efficiency by 25%, saving 10 hours weekly."
Lastly, adhere to instructions. Don't send a Word doc if the job or program asks for a PDF resume. Small details matter.
Step 2: Craft a Cover Letter That Tells a Story
Most applications would usually ask for a cover letter. Again, it's not a one-size-fits-all approach (nothing is).
Here’s the secret: recruiters want to see that you’ve done your homework.? It is your opportunity to personalize your application. It should tell a story about why you’re uniquely qualified for the role. Research the organization and show you’re a great fit by understanding its mission and how you can contribute.
You can share a short story about a project you led, a problem you solved, or a skill you mastered. Show them how this makes you the right person for their team. The skills and experience you highlight should match the specific role or program.
Remember to check for spelling and grammar errors. Proofread and proofread again, or get someone to do it for you.
Step 4: Clean Up Your Digital Footprint
Picture this, you met someone for the first time, and they Googled your name (because who doesn’t?). Your Twitter feed is full of rants, or your LinkedIn is two years out of date. Would they want to meet you again?
Google yourself. Fix your outdated LinkedIn profiles, remove questionable posts, and make sure your online presence aligns with the professional image you’re presenting.
Step 5: Follow Up Like a Pro?
After submitting your application, don’t let it hang in the air. Sending a polite follow-up email shows initiative and enthusiasm.?
When you follow up on an application, mention specifics: the role, the date you applied, and a polite request for an update. Respect their time, and always thank them for considering your application.
