Don't Be a Jerk!
While I've had the privilege of working with some truly exceptional professionals over the years, I've also encountered some unsavory characters who, for the sake of this article, we will identify as "jerks." My entire core and all that I am resonates with hard work and the pursuit of success. Success to some might be about money, power, and prestige, but for me, success has more substance than that. It's not just about accomplishing goals and the byproducts you benefit from as a result; it's about developing your character, having morals, and how you conduct yourself. The way you treat others is ultimately a reflection of you. So I offer this simple but powerful advice—don’t be a jerk.
In my experience, some of the most successful people I know excel not just because of their professional skills but because they are masters at creating, establishing, and maintaining relationships. This extends beyond the workplace into their personal lives. When you have a solid foundation at home, with strong personal and familial relationships, it gives you the peace of mind and a good foundation to thrive professionally.
I’ve seen colleagues who, despite the high demands of our industry, make time for their families and friends. This balance allows them to be fully present and perform at their best when they're at work. For example, one of my peers always prioritizes her family dinners. No matter how busy her day is, she makes it home in time to sit with her family. This commitment to her home life gives her a strong support system, allowing her to tackle professional challenges with a clear mind and positive attitude.
If you're in a management position, it's crucial to treat your employees with kindness and respect. Implementing an open-door policy is more than just a statement—it's about creating an environment where your team feels genuinely comfortable approaching you. This means not just saying you have this policy, but actually being the person that makes the policy user-friendly. You're approachable, listen actively, and show empathy. I remember a time when one of my team members was going through a tough personal situation. By simply being there for them, listening, and offering support, I not only helped them navigate their challenges but also built a stronger, more trusting relationship.

You are who you are when no one is watching. If you’re a jerk when everyone is watching, it typically does not lead to good, successful outcomes. People notice how you treat others, and it shapes their perception of you. A leader who is kind and respectful earns the loyalty and dedication of their team, while a leader who is dismissive and harsh creates a toxic environment that stifles growth and innovation, including your own growth, because who can thrive if you are nothing but a brewing pot of negativity? Following your internal compass not only will allow you to grow personally and professionally, but allow you to set good examples and mentor others on a positive path forward.
Moreover, you never know what someone else is going through. A little kindness and respect can go a long way in making someone’s day better. Whether it’s a smile, a thank you, or just taking a moment to ask how someone is doing, these small gestures can have a significant impact. In one instance, I took the time to mentor a struggling junior salesperson. With patience and encouragement, they not only improved their performance but also became one of our top performers. This transformation was fueled by the positive reinforcement and genuine care they received.
Treating everyone with kindness and respect will have positive results on your life, both personally and professionally. It fosters a positive work environment, builds stronger teams, and enhances your reputation as a leader. More importantly, it creates a ripple effect, encouraging others to act with kindness and respect in return.
Let’s strive to be leaders who are remembered not just for our achievements but for the way we made others feel. Treat others with the kindness and respect they deserve, and watch how it transforms your professional and personal life.

7 个月Morgan's latest post really resonates with me because it highlights the importance of kindness and respect, not just in achieving professional success, but in building a fulfilling life. I believe that how we treat others is a true reflection of who we are, and by fostering positive relationships and leading with empathy, we can create an environment where everyone thrives. The sentiment was written perfectly 2,000 years ago: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." Thanks so much Morgan!
