Way back when coal miners had a clever trick to keep themselves safe. They knew that some gases in mines were invisible and could kill you. So, they brought a canary into the mine. Canaries are generally more sensitive to harmful air compared to humans. If the canary stopped singing, fell over, or died, miners knew the air was dangerous and needed to get out quickly.
