It is almost mid-year my friends… kids will be out of school, vacations will be starting, and the weather will be heating up in North America. Often during this time, my clients are thinking about their goals and how they are executing against their goals. I notice that that at this point in the year if there hasn’t been progress that the goal gets dropped, glossed over, or avoided.? Does this sound familiar to you? I think that is why often people joke about “resolutions” and how they don’t get completed. Because the hard work of moving it forward is easier to avoid than to step into.?
Lets bring it to you. What is a goal that you have made that feels like its slipping to the wayside? That its easier to let it go than to recommit to it? Sometimes I think we make goals from our inner critic, that are “something we should or need to do”, rather than what we want to do. In those cases, it is the right action to let those goals go. They might be a good idea, or someone else’s idea, but if they aren’t YOUR wanted ideas, they shouldn’t take up your energy.
But what about the thing you really want? The goal in January that felt possible and clearly in line with your values and what you want for your life. Rather than let it slip, what would it take to pick it back up and make time for it to happen?? Often I have my clients ground in what had them make the goal to begin with, or to look at their values and see how attaining that goal would serve their values. Values are really like having a map to get you towards your fulfilled life, and your goals are the vehicles to take you down that road. If you don’t have your map, you are driving down just any street and have no idea where you will end up.
It’s important for you to not give up on yourself or your goals! Take a second, take a new inventory of where you are and your goals – let go of the wants you don’t want to do and get reconnected and re-excited about the ones that are going to get you where you want to be. You can do this!
