Don't get hacked! How to protect your LinkedIn account in 2 minutes...

What would it mean if you lost control of your Linkedin account...

...to a person with malice in mind?

Data leaks. Phishing. Ransomware. It's a hostile environment out there, and it's not getting any friendlier.

You should be protecting your LinkedIn account with two-factor verification. This means that you use your mobile/cell phone to confirm logins that are unusual.

This will mean that even if a hacker has your correct login details including your password, they won't be able to access your account. Not unless they have also got hold of your unlocked mobile/cell phone.

Take the first step — one minute

Make sure you have registered a phone number with LinkedIn. Go to?https://www.dhirubhai.net/mypreferences/d/manage-phone-numbers ?to do this.

You'll then receive confirmation codes to make sure everything is set up OK. You are now ready to switch on two-factor authentication.

Second step for two-factor authentication - 2nd minute

Use this shortcut:—?https://www.dhirubhai.net/mypreferences/d/two-factor-authentication

You can also apps like Google Authenticator rather than your phone for authentication.

Now, even if they had your password, a bad actor still could not access your account. They won't have your phone. You do.

Change your password regularly

It goes without saying that you should change your LinkedIn login password regularly.

Use an easy to remember but difficult to crack password.

Combining?unrelated?words, characters and numbers only you will know is a good way to do this.

Some examples below: —

  • boing+BOOK*credit=897
  • Jump/$tupid-56K.giraffe
  • comma5,pink4@FLASH

These types of passwords would currently take password cracking software years to crack. And remember, if you've set up two factor security, it would not matter even if they did manage to guess it.

Just keep your phone close to you, and keep it locked when you leave it unattended!

Setting up 2FA is a no brainer. Everyone should be doing this. I'm not convinced though about regularly changing passwords. That can actually create more risk, not less.

Excellent advice David I have to say that I find it rather worrying, that people get a kick out of hacking and causing aggravation to others

I have enabled 2FA on every account that offers it. And, like Jeff Young, it has been enabled on LI for many years! David, re "Just keep your phone close to you, and keep it locked when you leave it unattended!": the number of times I have seen unlocked phones on tables boggles my mind! Ever since my BlackBerry days, my phone has been set to auto-lock after 2 minutes of inactivity: there is too much info on my phone for me to let ANYONE have access to it!

Great advice David. I have had two-factor authentication in effect on my account for a very long time now. It really helps especially since I am warned about each new login! NAMASTE ?? ?? Network And Make All Sorts of Terrific Energy #TheLinkedInGuru (please click and follow)
