It's that time of year again, when the nights draw in and the temperature plummets. With darker days and the constant threat of rain, it pays for motorists to have their wits about them as autumn and winter loom.

IAM RoadSmart's head of driving and riding standards Richard Gladman stated:

"Winter is unpredictable, but highway authorities are already planning for it by building up their salt stocks and getting the snow clearing equipment out of storage."

"If they are getting ready then why shouldn't you? With a little bit of preparation you can avoid getting stuck and adding to the problems that bad weather can bring."

As a result, the body has offered some important advice on road safety during the colder, wetter months, with top tips like ensuring windscreens are kept clean and clear at all times, as well as setting up a pre-winter checklist to ensure car maintenance is always a priority, even when there's snow and ice on the ground.
