Whether you’re a seasoned presenter or new to public speaking, delivering a successful presentation can have a serious impact on your path to achieving your goals. But not to worry! Body Talk is here to help.?
Here are four considerations to keep your presentation engaging and effective:
Content
It may come as no surprise that you must do your research, ensuring that you know your topic inside and out. However, not everyone considers that your content must be tailored to your audience. What do they want to hear? Can your presentation reflect aspects of their website, such as language, theme, and values? Are you speaking to experts on the subject, or will you need to simplify your language??
You can take this research a step farther by considering what role your audience is playing, what problem they have that needs to be solved, and what you can offer them to help them achieve their goals.
Body Language
Non-verbal cues account for a majority of our communication, so it’s important that you prepare not only what you’re going to say, but also how you’re going to say it. We may have the best idea in the world, but if our body language isn’t congruent with our message, our presentation may fall flat.?
Rehearse your presentation with an open and welcoming posture, using gestures to emphasise key points. When in doubt, remember that palms up gestures often communicate warmth and openness, while palms down gestures are congruent with strong, confident statements. Core Values
Connecting with your core values is the number one method for maintaining confidence and self-assuredness throughout your presentation. Before you even begin to think about your presentation, define your core values for yourself. Then, attach those values to a code word or phrase that will connect you with the emotions associated with those values.?
For example, our CEO & Founder, Richard Newman, uses the phrase “polar bears.” This is because one of his core values is to be a good father, and “polar bears” brings him straight back to a game he plays with his children.?
Find your code word that instantly connects you with your values, and repeat it to yourself before entering the room or taking the stage for your presentation.?
Feedback
Once the presentation is over, don’t neglect the importance of feedback! Gather insights from both your team and your audience. This helps you refine your performance, demonstrate your commitment to continuous improvement, and strengthen your professional relationships.?
Mastering the art of presentation is a transformative skill that can elevate your career and make a lasting impression.?
By incorporating these considerations into your presentation approach, you'll not only captivate your audience, but also boost your self-confidence. It's not just about what you say, but how you say it, and the meaningful connection you establish with both your values and your audience.?
