Don't Forget to Consult
If you're anything like me, you will have your hands full with the fall-out from the Coronavirus restrictions.
Sorting out your finances so you can survive the shut-down period is probably your first priority, but don't forget to dot the Is and cross the Ts. For instance, have you entered into a meaningful consultation with your employees?
If you are intending to use the Job Retention Scheme, you will be changing your employment terms. Not many contracts of employment mention furlough - indeed, it's a new concept for most people. If you are going to furlough your employees, you will need to agree this with them. It's very likely that they will accept this change to their terms and conditions, particularly if the alternative is redundancy, but you must go through the process.
Consultation does not have to be a long drawn out process. You need to set out the facts about furlough and what it means for the employee and then ask them to indicate that they are willing to accept the change to their terms of employemnt. You should get their agreement in writing.
Once you have done this, you will be ready to enter your employees details onto HMRC's new portal - when it comes.....
I hope this was helpful.
