Don’t follow any advice, no matter how good, until you feel as deeply in your spirit as you think in your mind that the counsel is wise. David Seabury

The wise man listens to the thoughts of others, but always makes his own decisions. Ultimately, you are the only person responsible for your actions. Nobody else will be held accountable for the choices which you make. Since you, and you alone are responsible for the choices that you make, shouldn’t you actually be the one who decides what those choices are. Make sure that your actions are based on your choices, not the choices of other people.

It is good to listen to the advice and admonitions of others at times, but don’t automatically take the advice of others to be the gospel or to be more enlightened than your own thoughts. Meditate on the right choice until you feel deep in your spirit that you know which road to take. Don’t simply rely on your mind to figure things out. Spend time in quiet meditation. Clear your mind and listen to your intuition or your spirit.

Buddha taught the same principle to his followers. He said that you shouldn’t believe anything merely because someone tells you this or that. You should examine things for yourself, think about them, and not act on them until you know inside that they are right; then act on what you know is right.

The wise knows that he is solely responsible for his decisions in life, and therefore he is not content to act without giving thought to his actions beforehand. Listen to the counsel of the wise, but make your own decisions.
