Don't Flatten This Curve

Some regions are celebrating this week of May 4th as Teacher appreciation week …and after close to 2 months at home with my 10 year old, every week is now teacher appreciation week! ??
On a more serious note, this got me thinking about the changes in our learning efforts as we go from childhood to adulthood. On an average, during schooling, we spend 6.7 hours per day learning, which translates to about 100 days per year dedicated to learning.
Dear friends, how many days have you invested in learning last year?
Wondering what’s changed?
- Learning curve: With age, fluid skills (ability to learn new things) decline quicker than crystallized skills (prior learning and experiences). Learning requires more internal resources like: drive, commitment & resolve; in absence of external forces driving learning during our childhood!
- Forgetting curve: Memory retention declines with time, when there is no attempt to retain that information. This could be immediately after learning something new or over a period of time. The two methods that I’ve found most useful for learning retention is practical application and teach back.
- Interruption Curve: Are you able to focus on your learning without interruptions - like transactions in work & life, peer pressure, social media noise or staying in your comfort zone? If you can be aware of that ‘Inflection point’ on your learning curve, you could arrest the plateauing of the curve by increasing the learning effort!
“The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice” - Brian Herbert
