Don't Fence Me In

Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above,
Don't fence me in.
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love,
Don't fence me in.
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze,
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees,
Send me off forever but I ask you please,

Walking the fenceline with the Pentax K-3 III Monochrome and the Pentax-D FA 50mm F2.8 Macro. I’ve never been much of a macro guy, though I’ve owned the Pentax-M 100mm F4 Macro for decades. Not sure why; it’s just not a type of photography that I’ve spent much time on over the years. I bought the FA 50 for my film scanning setup because it has a reputation for being extremely sharp. But I find myself reaching for it more and more when I go on my photo walks. It has the short telephoto look I like so much — on the APS-C Monochrome it is a 75mm full frame equivalent. And it’s great for picking out detail. Recommended!

Sunday, August 4th — The long sad twilight of the craftsmen: No one is amazed by my sniper anymore. The photo drew accolades for the way I nailed the focus on his eye, peering through the rifle sight. No one notices anymore; everyone with a smartphone has eye focus. That’s always the fate for craft — focus for photographers, spelling for writers. Automation opens the craft to everyone while displacing the crafters whose jobs were based on those skills.
