Don't Fall Victim to Fake Charities!

Scammers impersonate genuine charities daily, asking for donations, especially during and after major events, for example Covid-19!

Here is how they work:

Fake charities and individual con artists will try to take advantage of your generosity and compassion for others in need. These people will steal your money by posing as a genuine charity. Not only are they stealing from YOU but they are also stealing money from charities who genuinely need donations to assist those who are in need of support.

Usually, scammers will pose as either agents of legitimate well-known charities or create their own name. Several scams are now focusing around supporting those infected by COVID-19 or those who have lost their loved ones or employment due to COVID-19 and need support. A typical one, that is all over Social Media (and some may be legitimate) is a prime example:

“My husband, the sole breadwinner, died this morning from Covid-19 and he has left me with my six- and eight-year-old children. I need money to support my family….”

Think logically – if you had to lose a loved one, would you really turn to social media to ask for financial assistance just hours later? You may post on social media informing friends and family of your loss, but you are not going to ask for financial support. These people love to play on emotions – shame two kids, under the age of 10 – how can you not help, even if it’s only R100?

I can also assure you that South African’s are givers and most of us belong to some kind of group – whether it be a religious group, a neighborhood group, a club of sorts or even a group of friends – and all of tus give – especially when a loved one is lost – South Africans bring food, bring love and bring support, for at least a month after the death of a loved one.

“My name is John, I am from XYZ charity and we are assisting 10 000 people with, food parcels and clothes and I am helping the children who have lost their parents. Please can your company donate R1-million to help these families who are suffering”

John woke up last week and decided he was going to feed 10 000 people by getting money from the companies based around South Africa – what John doesn’t know if that as a charity he has to register with the Department of Social Development – a process that can take up to three-months or longer due to the pandemic and lock down – John also doesn’t realize that there is a major process involved, including going to the local Department to submit his documents and then waiting on them for a registration number – and look at that – John is also using his own bank account – nice one John. Oh, and where exactly did you find 10 000 beneficiaries who so urgently need YOUR support? Poor kids, there is the emotion factor again – watch out!

How do you protect yourself from scammers such as these?

At Corporate Giving, we will ensure that every person or charity that approaches your company is legitimate – All documentation is in place including their non profit number, public benefit registration, constitution (or memorandum of association), financial statements, signed affidavits, the works. No fraudulent scams can get past us.

We will make sure that the person you choose to support aligns with your personalized (by us) aligns with your CSI policy. A very simple example is that a pharmaceutical company is not going to give money towards training engineering students and so forth. We will ensure that your CSI policies are correctly aligned.

We will ensure that you get the visibility that you deserve. You have given this donation, and those you have helped need to know where the help came from, and the community needs to know this too – media coverage, signage and other options can be discussed.

We will also ensure that the donations that you make are Tax Deductible, which means that you can claim a certain portion of your donation from SARS.

We offer an affordable package protecting you against the Covid-19 and other desperate scammers.
