Don't fall for the New Year's Resolution trap!

It's estimated that 40 million people in the UK will make a New Year's Resolution this year.
Between improving health, saving more money, spending more time with family and reducing work stress there will be plenty of well meaning intentions.
You and I know though that within 2 weeks most of these will be left in the dust, never to be truly acted on for the rest of the year. These same people probably made a similar resolution last year.
Let me ask you ...
How many years of well meaning intentions have You made?
If you've fallen for the New Year's Resolution trap in the past, make this year different.
You see, there's a science to following through on something you want to improve, change, achieve or experience. True enough, it starts with an idea and a well meaning intention, but that's not enough.
Here are my 4 quick steps that will exponentially improve your chances of following through all year long:
1) Get HONEST about your current situation.
2) Get CLEAR about the outcome you're looking for.
3) Get PASSIONATE about making it happen.
4) Get HELP from someone with the appropriate lived experience.
Let me illustrate ...
"I want to get fit" never inspired anyone. Ever.
On the other hand ...

"I want to increase my level of fitness because I can't play with my kids without getting out of breath, let alone have the future health where I can play with their kids. I want to have the vitality and energy to run around the garden, play ball, swing them around and as they grow take them on adventures in the woods, up mountains and in the ocean ... and I want to have the kind of health that allows me to do that with my grandchildren in the future. I can't stand the way I currently get out of breath, it makes me feel like a failure of a father, missing out on precious moments .. but the idea of having undeniable energy and fitness for years to come and all the incredible memories we're going to create fills my heart and soul. I'm going to reach out to a personal trainer to help create a programme specific to me, for the type of fitness I'm looking for that can fit into my schedule, and keep me accountable."
Now THAT is how you make a commitment and promise to yourself. THAT is how you set yourself up for success.
Fun fact: On 1st January 2024 I made a promise to myself to do exercise and rehab every day (for the shoulder injury I sustained in a car crash). My depth of feeling about my painful and restricted current situation was high and I was extremely unhappy with the support I wasn't getting. I took matters into my own hands. Went hard on the emotions and experiences I wanted once recovered, and Made It Happen. I sought out the right support, embraced it and we make a great team. I haven't missed a day. Birthdays, Anniversary, Summer Holidays, Christmas, New Year. Not a day missed. What started as an awkward new routine, quickly became a habit and then a non-negotiable. It's just who I am now. I have a family, a business, more at stake than ever before, I don't get up at 5am and yet I made time. I kept the promise I made to myself, by going deep on emotions, getting clear on outcomes and setting myself up for success.
New Year's Resolutions don't even come close.
I apply these steps and mentality to everything I want to change, improve, achieve and experience ... and my clients do the same, whether they're working on reducing stress and anxiety, writing a new chapter in their life, getting more balance in their life, going after their dreams, rediscovering their confidence, or reigniting their passion. It's why we get results.

2 个月That is a still a significant number of people committing to the NY resolution though, I was surprised to see that figure to be honest as I don't think anyone I've asked has elected to go down the NY resolution route so much these days. Though I agree with your blog, honesty is a key element in goal setting Happy New Year Martin!
