Don't Fall for the Counteroffer Trap

You landed a new job! Exciting, right? But then your current boss sweetens the pot to keep you. Before you dive back in, consider this: a counteroffer might seem like a win, but it often hides bigger issues.

Be prepared for a counteroffer. Your current employer might try to win you back with promises of more money, promotions, or increased responsibilities. These can be tempting, but don't let emotions cloud your judgment.

The guilt trips will likely start. You might hear phrases like "we're family" or "we'll miss you." While it's natural to care about your colleagues, these tactics are often used to manipulate your decision.

Why a counteroffer might not be your best move:

  • Underlying problems persist. More money won't fix a bad boss or a stagnant role.
  • Trust issues arise. Accepting a counteroffer might make your boss question your loyalty.
  • Opportunities are missed. The new job could offer growth and new skills.
  • Financial instability looms. Your company's financial situation could change.
  • Regret might creep in. What if the new job was incredible?

It's normal to feel nervous about change. But remember, new jobs offer growth opportunities. Focus on your future, not a quick fix.

So very true Keith Bennitz in my opinion, if you are shopping around then you have obviously checked out! Leave with dignity, on a good note. Maybe last impressions will be lasting.
