Don't Do What's Best... Do What is Necessary

Don't Do What's Best... Do What is Necessary

ONE QUICK THING before the weekend...

Most of us are trained to think that giving our “best effort” is the goal.?

We pour everything in, go above and beyond, burn the midnight oil, and stretch ourselves thin.

But here’s a better question to ask yourself:

Is this necessary?

Because in business—and life—there’s a difference between doing your best and doing what actually needs to be done.

Sometimes, giving your best means over-preparing for that webinar, writing yet another draft of that email, or obsessing over that last-minute tweak to your website.

And sometimes, it means focusing on just what will actually move the needle, even if it’s not “perfect.”

? It’s not about writing the best email—it’s about sending it so your client gets the info they need.?

? It’s not about creating the perfect launch plan—it’s about getting your offer out there and letting real feedback shape the next round.?

? It’s not about delivering the most impressive?elevator pitch (it will never be that)?—it’s about making the connection that leads to a sale.

The question isn’t whether you’ve put in 110%.?

The question is whether you’ve done what matters most to reach the outcome you want.

Think about it like this: If you’re climbing a mountain, it’s not about taking the most beautiful or elegant steps—it’s about taking the right steps to reach the summit.

What is truly necessary right now to get to the next step?

No really, ask yourself right now.?

All the stuff on your "To-Do" list.?

What is actually REQUIRED to get you to the next level??

Your Challenge This Week

Look at that project you’ve been overthinking, over-planning, or procrastinating.

And ask yourself:

?? What is truly necessary here?

?? What’s the simplest action that will get me closer to the result I want?

Then, let go of “doing your best” and just do that thing.

That thing, that thing, that thiiiiing! (You can have Lauren Hill stuck in your head too!?)?

Remember, progress?isn’t about giving your all; it’s about giving what’s needed.

I learned this strategy while working on my PHD. I found out very quickly that I couldn’t give 100% to every assignment, every task. It just wasn’t possible. I learned which task required 100% effort and which ones could use less. It was a lifesaver.

Tanya, I find the mountain climbing analogy VERY relevant ?? You describe well the negative side of perfectionism, leading to exhaustion or procrastination. I now implement "good enough" strategies to avoid it in my business and personal life.

Agree with Katia, love the photo Tanya, it’s so empowering! And I also agree with you both on this topic. Like Katia, I believe in doing my best, knowing that my best sometimes looks different. And when things get crazy, as they often do, I also learned the hard way that something is better than nothing and sometimes we just need to go for it! And learn and improve our best as we grow.??

(First, may I say - I love this picture!) One of my core beliefs is that everyone is doing their best. I also believe in doing *my* best in any situation - that's all I can control - and after that, letting go. However, it's a different angle to it than the one you describe here Tanya, which I completely agree with. When "your best" becomes a perfectionism trap, it's absolutely unproductive and unnecessary! So yes to doing what's necessary and that will move us forward. ??
