Don't be discouraged - you can do it, and you're never too old!! Learn Your Language!!

The limits of my language are the limits of my world.?????
?Ludwig Wittgenstein.?

I have been working in the language teaching industry for over two decades, and I couldn't even hazard a guess how often I've heard children learn languages considerably better than adolescents or adults. While it is probably true that the infant mind is more adapted to language acquisition, and it is undoubtedly true that young children have the most time focused on language learning, I would suggest the power of this suggestion is far more impactful and certainly a net negative in the effort to learn languages. Pre-loading the supposition that aged learners are naturally incapable of language acquisition leads to defeat. That isn't right.??

Yes, young children often acquire language/s seemingly effortlessly and naturally. They learn new vocabulary, grammar rules, and accents without explicit instruction because young children's brains are wired to learn a language quickly and efficiently. They have an innate ability to recognize patterns and make connections, which helps them to learn a language much faster than older learners.

However, this does not mean that older learners cannot learn a language just as well as young children. On the contrary, research has shown that adults can learn languages just as effectively as young children, if not better in some respects.

First, adults have the advantage of being able to use cognitive strategies to help them learn a language. They can analyze the grammar rules and patterns in the language and use their existing knowledge of other languages to make connections and infer meaning. This ability to use cognitive strategies can make learning a language more efficient and effective for adults.

Secondly, adults have a more comprehensive range of resources and learning opportunities. They can use language learning apps, watch TV shows and movies in the target language, attend language classes or exchange programs, and in some cases, travel to countries where the language is spoken. These resources can help adults immerse themselves in the language and practice using it in real-life situations.

Lastly, adults are more actively motivated to learn a language than young children. Adults often have specific goals for learning a language, such as career advancement or personal enrichment. This motivation can help them stay focused and dedicated to their language learning, leading to faster and more effective learning.

While it is true that young children often seem to learn languages effortlessly, this does not mean that older learners cannot learn a language just as well, if not better. Adults have many advantages in language learning, including cognitive strategies, learning resources, and motivation. So, if you're an adult thinking of learning a new language, don't be discouraged - you can do it, and you're never too old!!??
