Don’t Die Dumb! 7 Tips for Enhancing Your Learning and Avoiding Mistakes

Why Do We Make Mistakes?

Mistakes are part of being human; they are integral to our learning process. The hope is to learn and avoid repeating the same mistakes, but often we don't. Sometimes, we can't see the solution clearly or even recognize the problem, leading us to repeat unproductive behaviors.

In college, some friends and I painted the windows of a girls’ apartment black as a prank. The next afternoon, they all woke up at 4:30 p.m., having slept through the entire day. They were in the dark—literally and metaphorically—because they didn't realize it. This illustrates how we sometimes remain unaware of what we don't know.

The Obvious Can Be Overlooked

A recent experience highlighted how oblivious we can be to obvious dangers. On July 3rd, before Independence Day, our neighbors hosted a large gathering, setting off fireworks. Sparks flew onto the dry grassy hill behind our homes, quickly igniting a fire. The prompt actions of neighbors and firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to a nearby house. (See the photo I took with my phone.)

Astonishingly, the same neighbors held another party the next night and repeated the fireworks display, risking another fire. My wife turned on our sprinklers and watered down our roof just in case. Then she sat on me for the rest of the evening to keep me crossing the street and expressing my utter disbelief. Their repeated behavior, despite the previous night's consequences, showed a failure to learn from experience.

7 Tips to Improve Your Learning

To achieve better results, we need to enhance our learning. Here's how:

  1. Observe the Obvious – Pay attention to the outcomes of your actions. We frequently don’t stop to observe our actions and the ensuing results. Becoming a observer as well as a participant on our own life forces us to see what we may miss. ?
  2. Identify a change – Pinpoint something you can do to improve or get a different result. If you don’t know what you should chose, chose anything to see if your results will change. ?
  3. Act Quickly – Swift action accelerates learning. Avoid making the same mistake twice. Someone once said that often our failures hinder or cause us to hesitate to try again. You want to fail quicker, so you can continue to grow and improve.
  4. Find the Gap – Identify what's missing when you repeatedly get the same results from the same actions.
  5. Be Humble – Stay open and flexible, allowing yourself to observe, learn, adapt, apply, and assess results.
  6. Be Deliberate – Consciously focus on learning to enhance your understanding and skills.
  7. Learn from Others – Seek advice and information from those with experience. External perspectives can facilitate necessary changes.

Avoid Stupidity: The Inability to Learn

Being overly absorbed in our current activities or desires can lead us to “switch off” our learning ability. To achieve better outcomes, we must make intentional efforts to improve. Implementing these small changes can help broaden your perspective, prevent repeated mistakes, and enhance your results.

By following these seven tips, you can significantly improve your learning process, avoid repeating past mistakes, and achieve better outcomes in your endeavors.
