"DON'T DELETE THAT CONTACT"
Peter Mghendi
Head of Business Development | Commercial Manager | Head of Sales & Marketing
Two days ago was my third year since I resigned from Bamburi Cement Limited on personal reasons. Age wise, I am now also on third floor and with it comes a new sense of appreciation of both my personal and professional journey thus far.
When I left Bamburi, I took over operations of our family business in an effort to provide a source of economic sustainability and contribution to my family and perhaps leave an enduring economic inheritance to our family tree.
In the last three years from the time I resigned, our family business, Deusiam International Group Limited, has made Bamburi Special Products Ltd, which is a Subsidiary of Bamburi Cement Ltd, Sales of Kshs. 17,999,969 inclusive vat as of 7th April 2020. And this was both in my presence and absence in Deusiam International Group Limited.
To all my fellow professionals who have resigned from companies or whose employment contract has been terminated, especially during this time of covid19 pandemic, I urge you to try and not burn all the bridges of your former organization(s).
It would be a great disservice to both you and the years of experience in that organization(s) if you fail to find a way to turn that experience into future value, be it economically or otherwise.
Keep in touch with the decision makers. You never know what profitable future opportunity or referral can arise based on your past experience with that organization. And the same applies to your former clients too.
So the next time you want to delete a Business Contact, ask yourself, "What future revenue am i throwing away by deleting this contact?" Your reasons for deleting that contact may be valid and genuine but is it worth the future opportunity lost or future referral missed by deleting it? Numbers don't lie. Had i deleted my Bamburi contacts, it would have cost our family business approximately Kshs. 18 Million Kenya Shillings of future business partnership.
Remember, in business it's never too personal even though it feels that way at times. It's just business as usual. And no professional experience is ever wasted!

4 年Wow! Thank you Peter for sharing this. Same thing happened to me a while back. Left my former employer in good faith to pursue growth and development in self employment. You have no idea the kind of value I keep deriving from the relationships I built while I was still there. You are right "It's never personal even if it feels that way".
