This sounds counterintuitive but having more talent in the market makes it harder for hiring managers to hire, and job seekers to get jobs. So what's going on?
-A lot of companies let go of their talent teams in 2022/23 and the hiring manager simply won't get a chance to go through 13K of applications?
- Even if the hiring manager does go through some of them. Out of those 13K of applicants, the majority are the wrong skill set. A huge amount of time is wasted meeting with the wrong people and the role often just ends up gong?no where and closing. ?
-The hiring manager's budget was extremely hard to get. So even if one person from that stack of applicants is 80% what they need, the hiring lead is trigger shy and wants 90-100% of the skills listed on the job description.
This is called a hiring

The chances of you applying to a job in this market and getting an interview is slim right now. So what do job seekers do? It's clear at this stage, who you know in this market goes a long way. I have been advising anyone I work with that their network is their most valuable asset in the current?market and if you don't have a network then start creating it. Remember your network is not just your connections on LinkedIn, it's every single person you know.?
- Get a referral from someone you know into the company and if you don't know someone, find a way to get to know someone.?
- NETWORK. If you aren't working right now. Structure your day with meetings with old colleagues and friends. Ask them for referrals and intros. If you do this every day and meet only 3 people a day for 5 days a week, and those people give you 2 names, you will potentially have 180 warm contacts in 4 weeks.
- Meet with recruiters. We are the most networked people, with the people you want to work for, so use us. By utilizing our reach, on top of your own efforts you will have a lot of talent outreach working for you at the same time.
Good luck out there :-)
