Don't break my glass! ?

During this long break, I have invested my time to learn German intensively. Unexpectedly, I also require another half a year for the recovery of my ACL-Tear. Amid all theses, I found myself reading a lot. My current read is, “Surrounded by Idiots: The Four Types of Human Behavior by Thomas Erikson” https://www.amazon.com/Surrounded-Idiots-Behavior-Effectively-Communicate-ebook/ , and it’s especially interesting.

DISC (Dominant, Influence, Stability, Compliance), is something that we are familiar with, especially to those working in corporate companies, or others who have participated some people management workshops. Skeptically, I purchased the book for a try-read. However much to my surprise, I couldn’t stop reading and found myself having many epiphany moments.

For many years, I have known that there are many underlying issues and unexplained agitations within me.

The feedback that I received is: Sometimes I am impatient. Sometimes I looked cold. Sometimes I am direct. Putting it in a nicer way: I am goal oriented, I am honest, I act fast, and I am dedicated.

However, neither the compliments nor the harsh comments solve my questions – “why am I acting the way I am?” and “what are the potential antidotes other than going spinning or weight training after a stressful day?” ????

Here is my summary with a few interesting takeaways on useful tips in day-to-day work or personal life.

First, get to know red, yellow, blue, and green. How they are connected to the characteristics of the four elements: fire, air, earth, and water, or to four humors: blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm.

Red and Yellow are similar in the way they react quickly. The difference – red acts with the action, yellow acts with the mouth/ verbal action. The consequences? One can be forceful, the other can be long-winded or even verbal diarrhea.

Blue takes time to warm up. They might look indifferent to your private life because they are just waiting to collect more data and information.

Green is a peacemaker, and yet can be stubborn. Sometimes a doggone-I-thought-they-were-adults approach will not be useful.

However, whichever color you are, be a green by listening and observing, when you aren’t sure about the color type of another person.

As explained in the book on the temperament of Reds and Blues, my personality is described as a shot glass (able to hold a bit alcohol (anger), and hence, easily emptied), and a barrel with a tap (able to hold a lot of alcohol (anger), and the pressure (stress) is regulated by itself). This is why I am sport enthusiast. And here, I come to understand that this habit of mine is a means to release my stress or extra energy. ?? The book explained this as part of stress management.

Finally, my questions are answered satisfactorily. And it dawned on me that the reason why my last role as a Clinical Implementation Manager fits me naturally, was actually due to the Red (fast) + Blue (high quality in implementation) combination in me.

Quoting from the book, red is the one that is always surrounded by idiots as compared to the other 3 colors. Again, most of us consist of at least 2 colors, or sometimes 3. Whatever I shared is just a fraction of the book. So please guess your color mix or take a test here https://www.surroundedbyidiots.com/en/simplified-disc-analysis/, after you finished reading.

Hope it sheds some light on a few questions in your work or personal life. ??
