Don't be a biscuit or a doormat leader!

Don't be a biscuit or a doormat leader!

Don't be a biscuit or a doormat! These two extremes are common pitfalls in leadership, often emerging from underlying fears. The 'biscuit leader' may be driven by the fear of losing control and face, while the 'doormat leader' may be driven by the desire to be liked at the expense of their own needs.

In case you're wondering what I mean by 'biscuit leader'. It is when someone puts on a tough exterior but is actually crumbly and fragile on the inside.

The key to Active Leadership is to develop a soft front with a strong back (coined by Brené Brown). This means embracing empathy, compassion, and vulnerability while knowing how to set healthy boundaries. A self-aware leader creates a safe space for others to stand in their power while fostering collaboration and creativity. By assuming good intentions and always starting with kindness, rather than assuming bad intentions and putting on a tough exterior, a self-aware leader inspires others to do the same.

When we choose to be Active Leaders, we are repeatedly generating the courage to balance kindness and empathy with healthy boundaries. This is how we are also choosing to create an environment where individuals are inspired to bring their best selves to work.

In other words, it all starts with YOU!

I love this message Carole... how can anyone expect to lead by understanding the motivations and behaviours of other when the don't know about themselves. As Socrates identified... "knowing thyself is the beginning of wisdom".
