Don't believe your own lies! The stories we make up to keep ourselves safe.
Often in my work with clients they will say something like "I would love to start my own thing, but I'm not innovative enough..."
When I sit them down and explore that belief with them, there are dozens of counter-examples of innovation throughout their lives. They are amazed to discover that it isn't true. So why the belief?
When we dig deeper, we discover that it is often just an easy thing to say and believe to protect them from a much deeper fear. Often, for highly successful people, that fear is the fear of failure, of looking bad, or of making a mistake. Or a belief that they have to succeed at all costs. So they pick easy things to succeed at, instead of something scary that they really care about.
After all, if I do the thing I really care about, and that fails, what then? What does that say about me? Where would I go from there?
So we make up these safe and easy stories as comfortable justifications not to do the scary thing. It makes sense. But it doesn't help us.
The truth is, if you don't do the scary thing that you really care about, you might feel safe, but you will also feel empty and unfulfilled. Don't trust me on that. Check in with yourself. How fulfilled do you feel when you hold yourself back?
So I invite you to ask yourself: What "easy lies" am I currently telling myself (and others) to try and keep from doing the thing that really both excites and scares me?
At the very least, start by being honest with yourself, even if you're too scared to do anything about it just yet.
If you would like to explore some of your own limiting beliefs with me in a safe space as a professional certified coach, and see how you might start shifting them out of the way to create the life you really want, reach out to me.
