Don’t be a Back-Bencher
Hello and Happy Monday!
This is a continuation of the discussion we started last week and the sixth technique you can use to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented every day on your path to success.
Following the Createyourself Principle of being a Contrarian - Don’t be a Back-Bencher!
The definition of a backbencher stems from the British Parlament where the newest and weakest in political influence legislator traditionally sits in the rear of the chambers behind the power brokers of the legislature, parliament, and government who sit in the front benches or seats.
We learned in Technique I how to study new material in short spurts because this is how the brain best retains information. In this sixth technique, we talk about a strategy to best receive new information from a teacher or lecturer. This goes for students in a classroom and professionals attending a conference. Sit in the front row and closest to where the information is being disseminated — that is if the teacher writes it on the board, be near the board; if the teacher speaks it, be near the teacher’s desk or podium; if the teacher uses a projector, then have the best view of the screening area.
By sitting in the front row, you will have a clear view of where the material is being presented. You will also not be distracted by all that is going on behind you. If you are taking online courses that are taught live by the teacher, then dress appropriately and turn on your camera. Listen to the speaker and react to what they are saying so that they see you are listening. Not only will this help you listen and learn, but it will also show the teacher you are interested in what they are saying and teaching.
Trust me (I teach both in-person and online college courses), when the teacher sees the students excited about the subject and their teaching, they perk up, they get excited to teach and that makes them more interesting to you as they share in your enthusiasm. It is amazing to me how different I feel teaching depending on the audience's enthusiasm for the subject.

By showing your enthusiasm and respect, you will also gain the attention of the teacher of your newly absorbed information. You don’t have to be the teacher’s pet, but being close and showing your interest and attentiveness tells the teacher that you respect them and that the information that they are passing on to you is important to you.
This is the opportunity in the air; you must grab it before it is diluted by all those behind you.
Additionally, when sitting in your chair you must not slouch and you must not be wearing a hoodie or hat that hides your face from the teacher. You want them to see that you are genuinely interested in their message. Lean forward and focus on what is being said at the front of the class.

2 年A very happy Monday to you & ALL! I might try this in my classes this evening. I’m confident that my teachers won’t allow anyone to slouch. In fact they sorta insist on excellent posture. Now more than ever I’m looking forward in the Yin class ;) & considering a HOT power class bc of this post, thanks! Being in front IMO, a student has to be okay in messing up sometimes ??. So far, I don’t think I’ve entertained myself more, as I mess up a lot. Btw when you are upside down, left & right seem backwards. Truth be told, I’ve actively search for apparel that has L on the left & R on the right side. Unfortunately to no avail. I’m learning how to breathe with intent. To become stronger both physically & mentally at the same time in a heated room. Ya gotta try it if possible. You’ll feel invigorated. Thank you Dr. Jones for this information. Great points. Front row?!? Okay??
